GriefTalks: It's Okay to Not Be Okay

Thu, May 07

|

Zoom

Grief can change how we experience ourselves and the world around us. We may be living the same life, but it no longer feels the same from the inside. What we’re carrying is what was, and what is now. We don’t have to be okay with this shift, these feelings can exist, just as it is.

About The Event

Grief doesn’t just change how we feel, it can alter how we experience ourselves and the world around us. The ways we think, the energy we carry, how we respond to others, even how we make sense of things, can all begin to shift. What once felt familiar may no longer feel accessible in the same way. We may find ourselves moving through the same life, but not experiencing it in the same way from the inside.

This can feel disorienting. Not just because it’s painful, but because it disrupts your sense of what is normal, predictable, or expected. When our internal experience no longer matches who we were or how we used to function, it’s easy to interpret that as something being wrong.

But what often goes unrecognized is that grief is not just emotional, it can be existential. It reflects a change in our world, our relationships, sense…

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We acknowledge the land on which we gather, and where the Centre for Grief and Healing (BFO-H/P) operates. This land has been and is still inhabited by many Indigenous Peoples since the last Ice Age which was 13,000 years ago. In particular, we acknowledge the territory of the Anishinabek-Ojibway/Chippewa, Huron-Wendat, and Haudenosaunee peoples. The land that is home to the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people. We are grateful to now be on the land that is the land of Indigenous Peoples since time began.

The land we are presently on is under the stewardship of the Mississaugas of the Credit, who are the signatories of the treaty and holders of the area. We recognize that the land we are on was taken away through colonization, oppression, and expropriation. In the hopes for a better future and building relationships, we recognize, require, and honour what is in the truth and reconciliation report and the calls to action. We acknowledge and are grateful for having the privilege of being where we are, for this land, and for the Indigenous Peoples who have and continue to inhabit this land.

This Land Acknowledgment was created in collaboration with Indigenous Elder, Cat Criger.
