Heal with Food with These Fundraising Ideas

Picture1.png

Gather your friends, family, colleagues and host a meal together (or virtually) and ask them to donate what they would have spent on a night out to BFO-Halton/Peel.

You can organize the gathering as an in-person event, or  through a video-calling program/app (e.g. Zoom, Facetime, etc.) and friends can either cook the exact same meal and you can compare notes, or something completely different. You could theme the gathering with food by time of day (ie.brunch) /season/country/ethnicity, or anything else that inspires you. Let your imagination run wild in ways to make this event special. Whether this is due to physical distancing practices or to gather friends from around the world, we can still raise our forks in support of BFO-Halton/Peel.

Dinner Party:  As the host, you would provide dinner for your guests, and ask them to make a donation to BFO-Halton/Peel for what they would have spent on a night out. Possible themes are endless and are only limited by your imagination! You could have a country or region-themed dinner (e.g. An Evening In Mexico or Texas – think ribfest), a type of food as your subject (e.g. chili cook-off) or have it in honour of someone you know (e.g. birthday, retirement, etc.). Themes can help influence your menu, beverages, music, décor, etc.

Dine In With Take-out: Share a meal with your friends and family by each ordering takeout from your favourite restaurant and meeting virtually, or at your home for dinner, conversation, and laughs.

Pizza Party: You can do so many things with this kind of a night.  Everyone can gather at your home and together you all make pizza from scratch, listening to Italian music of course. Or guests make their own pizzas, with you providing the bases (pizza crust, pitas, english muffins, etc.) and toppings. You can order in from a few of your favourite pizza places instead of a few pies from just one restaurant.

Pancake Breakfast: Host a pancake and PJs feast. You can have a buffet of fruits (blueberries, bananas, peaches) and sauces (like butter, syrup, icing sugar) that everyone can heap onto their stacks of cakes. You could ask people to bring their favourite coffee and tea  to make it extra fun.

The Big Game: Invite your friends and family or sports buddies to get together in person or virtually to watch a sporting event. You can make it pot luck, or you can order in favourite wings and subs.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We want to acknowledge the land on which we gather, and where the Centre for Grief and Healing (BFO-H/P) operates. This land has been and is still inhabited by many Indigenous Peoples since the last Ice Age which was 13,000 years ago. In particular, we acknowledge the territory of the Anishinabek-Ojibway/Chippewa, Huron-Wendat, and Haudenosaunee peoples. The land that is home to the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people. We are grateful to now be on the land that is the land of Indigenous Peoples since time began.

The land we are presently on is under the stewardship of the Mississaugas of the Credit, who are the signatories of the treaty and holders of the area. We recognize that the land we are on was taken away through colonization, oppression, and expropriation. In the hopes for a better future and building relationships, we recognize, require, and honour what is in the truth and reconciliation report and the calls to action. We acknowledge and are grateful for having the privilege of being where we are, for this land, and for the Indigenous Peoples who have and continue to inhabit this land.

This Land Acknowledgment was created in collaboration with Indigenous Elder, Cat Criger.
